Recently stumbled across an historical example of Narco-Capitalism during World War II by pure coincidence. Even more significant is the fact that an entire intelligence agency was heavily involved in clandestine smuggling operations to acquire contacts and product within a country’s criminal underworld in anticipation of a future military invasion of that country. This was something that I totally did not expect to find because I was of the impression that Narco-Capitalism is something associated with the War on Drugs. Then again, I have been insisting that the Cold War is technically the latter half of World War II, and the War on Drugs has been around since the Cold War. I definitely should write another Economic History Case Studies Entry on the topic because how I discovered it is about as bizarre as this story.
